It was interesting to find out how this rein of terror came about. I had some trouble keeping all the characters straight, but most of them were a bloody mess before the end anyway, so it didn’t matter.

I like the story with its surprise ending.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Turton was born 1980, and raised[2] in Widnes, England and educated at The University of Liverpool, where he received a BA (Hons) in English and Philosophy. After graduating, he spent a year working as a teacher in Shanghai,[3] before becoming a technology journalist in London. He moved to Dubai to become a travel journalist, living there for three years until he returned to London to write his first novel.

Career[edit]

Turton’s debut novel, The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (released in the US as The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle[4]) won the First Novel Award at the 2018 Costa Book Awards[5] and has sold in 28 languages.[6] Since publication, it has sold over 200,000 copies[7] in the UK. In an interview given to The Guardian, he described writing the book as “just awful”.[8]

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle received a number of other accolades. It won Best Novel in the 2018 Books Are My Bag Readers’ Awards.[9] That same year, it was shortlisted for a New Writers’ Award at the Specsavers National Book Awards,[10] Debut of the Year at the British Book Awards,[11] and longlisted for a New Blood Dagger and Gold Dagger at the Crime Writers’ Association Awards.[12]

Val McDermid selected Turton to appear on her New Blood panel at the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival.[13] In 2019, it was shortlisted for Best Debut Novel at the Strand Magazine Critics Awards[14] and longlisted for the Glass Bell Award.[15]

In October 2020 Turton’s second novel was published, The Devil and the Dark Water.[16] It won the 2020 Books Are My Bag Fiction Award,[17] and was shortlisted for the Ian Fleming Dagger[18] at the Crime Writers’ Association Awards. It was Waterstones Thriller of the Month,[19] and selected for Between the Covers, a seven-part book TV programme on BBC Two hosted by Sara Cox.[20] It has sold in 20 countries.[21]

In December 2020 it was announced that Netflix had bought the rights to a seven-part series adaptation of The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, produced by House Productions, and to be created and written by Sophie Petzal. In April 2021, The Devil and the Dark Water was optioned for television by Urban Myth. It will be written by Howard Overman, with Turton serving as an executive producer on the project.[22]

In November 2020, Turton signed a contract to write[23] two more “high-concept” mystery novels for Bloomsbury. He’s described them as “nuts”.

I suspect this book would be an academician’s research resource dream and a student’s nightmare, if assigned to read for class. As a casual, arm chair historian, I enjoyed reading this book.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Gaub McCullough, born July 7, 1933, is an American author, narrator, popular historian, and lecturer.[2] He is a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award and a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian award.[2][3]

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, McCullough earned a degree in English literature from Yale University. His first book was The Johnstown Flood (1968); and he has since written nine more on such topics as Harry S. Truman, John Adams, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the Wright brothers. McCullough has also narrated numerous documentaries, such as The Civil War by Ken Burns, as well as the 2003 film Seabiscuit; and he hosted American Experience for twelve years.

McCullough’s two Pulitzer Prize-winning books, Truman and John Adams., have been adapted by HBO into a TV film and a miniseries, respectively.

Will we never learn from history?  Perhaps, all those who run for a government office should read this book and others like it. At the end of this graphic narrative of courage, loyalty, and commitment of a population which was abused, misused, and never understood, is a bibliography to verify and authenticate the culture and individuals in the book.

Autumnal, Acrostic

by Kate Chamberlin

Ashes from burning piles of leaves

Undulate like  precursors of snow on the breeze.

Tree branches stand naked and jig

Until snow stops swirling to coat each twig.

Migrating geese honk and jostle the skyways,

Neighborhood children Trick-or-Treat as they traverse the driveways.

After frost is on the pumpkin

Lovers canoodle beneath an Eider down quilt and sleep in.

Kate’s 2¢:  “Winter World : The Long Winter”, The Solar War”, The lost colony” by A. G. Riddle

“Winter World : The Long Winter”, The Solar War”, The lost colony” by A. G. Riddle

Kate’s 2¢: There is a plethora of in-depth biographies of authors and reviews of their books, that state the title, author, published date, and genre; as well as,     describing what the book is about, setting, and character(s), so, Kate’s 2¢ merely shares my thoughts about what I read.  I’m just saying…

Winter world

Well, the latest theory is that there is global warming, however, this sci-fi story has the globe in another ice age. This time it is caused by aliens sucking up the suns energy, keeping the world in a cool-down.

“The solar war”

3-D printers come in very handy when they’re needed to make the items that will save the human race from extinction.

Don’t you just hate it when the epilogue ends with a huge cliff hanger?

The lost colony: Book 3 / Long winter.

–If 3-D were any other number, the universe would be a radically different place.

–The grid we created, isn’t the first one ever created.

–Space time is the ultimate substance of the universe.

–The Big bang that created our universe will occur again, creating stars and begin all over again. A process with no beginning and no end; a loop.

–There is a dark side to the hunger of ambition.

–I want to go to bed every night knowing I helped someone overcome their darkest hour.

These three books were read by Edoardo Ballerini as James and Amanda Lee Camm as Emma. By alternating the view points through the readers voices, I enjoyed listening to the three books,  one right after the other  in a marathon session.

From his website:

–A.G. Riddle spent ten years starting internet companies before retiring to pursue his true passion: writing fiction.

His debut novel, The Atlantis Gene, is the first book in a trilogy (The Origin Mystery) that has sold over three million copies worldwide, has been translated into twenty-four languages, and is in development to be a major motion picture.

His fourth novel, Departure, follows the survivors of a flight that takes off in 2015 and crash-lands in a changed world. HarperCollins published the novel in hardcover in the fall of 2015, and 20th Century Fox is developing it for a feature film.

Released in 2017, his fifth novel, Pandemic, focuses on a team of researchers investigating an outbreak that could alter the human race. The sequel, Genome, concludes the two-book series.

Released in 2019, his seventh novel, Winter World, depicts a group of scientists racing to stop a global ice age. It is the first book in The Long Winter Trilogy, which is now complete.

Riddle grew up in Boiling Springs, North Carolina and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. During his sophomore year in college, he started his first company with a childhood friend. He currently lives in Raleigh, North Carolina with his wife, daughter, and an eccentric dog.

No matter where he is, or what’s going on, he tries his best to set aside time every day to answer emails and messages from readers. You can reach him at: ag@agriddle.com

–Family is a circle of people, who love each other enough to hold hands lightly, until they need to hold on tightly.

–To be as understanding of Terry and what he was going through as he could be. He couldn’t really understand what it felt like  to be paralyzed, because, he wasn’t.

–Sensitivity training: After Carry simulated what it was like to be paralyzed from the armpits down, he had a better understanding of what is twin, Terry, was going through as a quadriplegic.

–When one person in the family is seriously injured, everyone is injured and all need to adjust.

I thought this story was well fleshed out with each family member’s perspective receiving due attention.

–Who ever thought we’d die.

–What about those moments when you strip your gears, whether you’re chemically loaded or not, get lost inside the immensity of creation and see too deeply into our ephemerality and our penchant for greed and war and willingness to destroy the big blue marble; and for a brief moment, you scare yourself so badly you wonder why you didn’t park your porridge on the ceiling a long, long time ago.

The many voices of the reader, Will Patton, added much drama to this story. Even when he whispered, the volume wasn’t too soft to hear and the loud yells, didn’t blister my eardrums. He really has the voice of ‘the God-father’ down pat.

   I enjoyed this para-normal dective mystery story, although, I didn’t read it a bed-time.
