Joanne Fischmann (née Gibson, born c. 1943 in Swanville, Minnesota) is an American writer, using the pen name Joanne Fluke. She is best known for her cozy mystery series surrounding a small-town baker, Hannah Swensen. Five movies for the Hallmark Channel have been created based on her Hannah Swensen series.

Other pen names: Joanne Fluke, John Fischer, R.J. Fischer, Jo Gibson, Chris Hunter, Gina Jackson, Kathryn Kirkwood

Fluke was born to Cliff and Esther Gibson in c. 1943 in Swanville, Minnesota.[2] She graduated from Swanville High School in 1960, attended St. Cloud State University and earned a B.A. in psychology, in 1973, from California State University, San Bernardino.[2][3]

Fluke has been baking since she was a child and comes from a long line of bakers.[1]

According to the author’s website, “While pursuing her writing career, Joanne has worked as a public school teacher, a psychologist, a musician, a private detective’s assistant, a corporate, legal, and pharmaceutical secretary, a short-order cook, a florist’s assistant, a caterer and party planner, a computer consultant on a now-defunct operating system, a production assistant on a TV quiz show, half of a screenwriting team with her husband, and a mother, wife, and homemaker.”[7]

Fluke is married to television writer Ruel E. Fischmann[2] and lives with her husband, children and stepchildren in southern California.[7]

Fluke began writing her cozy mystery series starring Hannah Swensen, an “amateur sleuth and baker” in 2000.[1] The idea for the series came out of Fluke’s desire to create a cookbook, and her editor’s suggestion that she write a cozy mystery series.[8] Fluke combined the two ideas by including recipes in the series.[8] Hannah Swensen lives in a small Minnesota town and Fluke feels that the stories are a welcome escape from reality.[9] Library Journal writes that the depiction of the story in Cinnamon Roll Murder is so natural, it is difficult to remember that the characters are fictional.[10] Booklist praised her plot-twists in Devil’s Food Cake Murder.[11] Her book, Wedding Cake Murder, sees Swensen getting married and solving a crime in the same story.[12]

But the fun stops when she spots a run-away boat on the water and, on board, the lifeless body of the event’s renowned celebrity spokesperson … Famed TV show host Sonny Bowman wasn’t humble about his ability to reel in winning catches, and no one knew that better than his tragically overworked sidekick, Joey.    It is obvious from the beginning that Casey has a deeper problem than drinking.  What is so troubling that she drinks? When all is revealed, the ending is exciting and poetically just.

–The house across the lake is Made of glass, steel, and stone, it reflects the chilly water and the grey autumn sky, using them to  mask whatever was happening inside.

–No matter how much you look, something just below the surface will always remain hidden.

–Why bother if you’re not going to give it your all.

–What was fuzzy to the naked eye, is now crystal clear with the binoculars.

–Any reflective surface was capable of capturing a soul.

–The sunset makes the water sparkle like pink champagne, but I know it’s not.

–Len lurks down there, waiting for another victim.

Todd Ritter, also known under the nom de plume of Riley Sager and Alan Finn, is an American author of thriller novels.

(Note that Riley Sager is a pseudonym used by the male author Todd Ritter, however as Todd seems to be marketing the pseudonym as a female we are addressing “Riley Sager” as if it is a female until we can get confirmation otherwise) There are those that are born with a silver spoon, or so an idiom soberly pipes.

Ritter grew up in a ranch-style house in Pennsylvania.[3] Before becoming a full-time novelist Ritter worked as a journalist, editor and graphic designer.[4][5]

Writing career[edit]

As of 2022 Ritter has released six novels as Sager and three novels under his real name, the latter of which make up the Kat Campbell series.[6] Ritter has also released one novel under the penname Alan Finn, Things Half in Shadow.[7] He referenced the choice to write under the name Sager, stating that “since we were looking for a new publisher, one could argue that editors would be willing to go with someone who had a clean slate, rather than a critically acclaimed author with a spotty sales record.”[8] The author’s website for “Riley Sager” initially lacked an author photo or any gender identifying language, including pronouns.[9] This has since changed, as the current website features a photo of Ritter and uses male pronouns.[10]
